The project is funded under Priority Axis 3 “Improving the intermodality of passenger and freight transportation” and Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013.
Aim of the project
This project aims to connect the Central Railway Station and the International Bus Station with the central city area and, through the metro, with the large residential districts in the western and eastern areas in the direction of the airport, whereby the number of passengers transported after commissioning the metro stations of stage I will total approximately 90,600 passengers per day, and the total number of passengers after concluding this metro extension project will reach about 295,000 passengers per day.
The project efficiency will be ensured in several directions by achieving the following aims:
- In addition to fast and efficient transport service for the population, the project implementation will provide a convenient intermodal connection with big transportation hubs such as the Central Railway Station, the Central Bus Station, the airport, and with the national road network in the city's peripheral areas where large buffer parking lots have been provided near the end metro stations with a view to limiting the access of vehicles in the central city area.
- As of their commissioning the sections under the Sofia metro extension project account for 43.2% of the total length of the metro, and the section “Nadezhda Road Junction (MS 5-II) — Cherni Vrah Blvd. (MS 11-II)” alone accounts for 20.5%.
- The total number of passenger travels in the sections under the project after their commissioning will be 51,275,200 travels per year, out of which the section “Nadezhda Road Junction (MS 5-II) — Cherni Vrah Blvd. (MS 11-II)” of stage I alone will account for 26,455,200 travels per years.
- Additional 364 permanent new jobs will be created.
- By implementing stage I of the metro extension the accessibility to the city transport system will result in:
- Reducing transportation via ground transport by 2.0 million km per year
- Reducing the number of vehicles by 82 by virtue of public mass transport lines being closed down or reorganised
- Relieving traffic with the availability of the metro compared with traffic without the metro — 3%
- Reducing traffic collisions and accidents through relieving traffic with the availability of the metro
- Reducing harmful emissions in the atmosphere
- Reducing noise and vibration levels in the urban environment
- Travel duration will be reduced by 16 minutes which will result in time savings for citizens

Technical parameters of project
The Sofia Metro Extension Project, Stage I — metro diameter II: section from Nadezhda Road Junction (MS 5-II) — Cherni Vrah Blvd. (MS 11-II) is 6.5 km long and has 7 metro stations, the average distance between them being 912 m.
The main technical parameters of the project are as follows:
- Constructing 5 underground metro stations, retrofitting and finishing the construction of the two metro stations already built, as well as overall architectural layout of the 7 metro stations:
- Constructing section tunnels between: MS 5-II ÷ MS 9-II and MS 10-II ÷ MS 11-II with a total length of 4.4 km (including the two turnbacks at the start and end of the track);
- Retrofitting the metro section between MS 9-II and MS 10-II with a length of 1 050 m.
In addition to the construction works the section includes:
- Rail track and conductor rail with a length of 6.5 km along double track;
- Three dispatch management systems — covering the movement, electric power supply, as well as sanitary and technical equipment for a 6.5 km long section;
- Radio connection system for a 6.5 km long section;
- Electric power supply system, including 7 traction step-down substations, cable lines for a 6.5 km long section and external power supply of key traction step-down substations;
- Traffic automation and train speed regulation systems for a 6.5 km long section;
- Complex audiovisual systems and low current systems for metro operations for a 6.5 km long section.
